Comment Spy Camera Glass – A Camera in Your Cornea - 03/29/10
We’re a society ruled by plastic and convenient shopping. The days of “Dodgy Dan’s Emporium of Spurious Imports” are long gone, replaced with the clean convenience of web-based comfort and purchasing ease. Come to think of it, you can pretty much use your parents’ or partner’s credit details to buy anything from Mace to Tazers, from nanchuks to nightsticks and from night vision goggles to spy camera glasses.
I Spy
Spy camera glasses are fixtures of spy movies. The only thing more disturbing than the fact that they’re used in everyday life is the possibility that there is a sufficient corresponding demand to warrant what appears to be a sizeable international market for it. Rather than being the reserve of some backwoods survivalist cult, a quick Google search will throw up any number of physical and web-based outlets where anyone in practically any country can purchase a set of spy camera glasses. These spy camera glasses can set you back anywhere from around US$50 for the school boy spy-on-the-girls-in-gym-class variety to thousands of dollars for the covert, top secret, high-grade, special forces military specification version that makes you feel you’ve had computers implanted in your cornea. A set of spy camera glasses like these may be the closest you can get to being either a T-1000 Terminator or an MI6 agent.
Now More than Fiction
Spy camera glasses do occupy an interesting place in the evolution of gadgets and widgets, from fantasy spy fiction right up there with Maxwell Smart’s “shoe-phone” to real-life, not-to-leave-home-without essential secret agent equipment. In many ways, spy camera glasses hold a similar position in the world of modern day popular culture as video conferencing, remote satellite surveillance imaging, video telephones, and even the now humble cellular telephone.
No more than two decades ago, spy camera glasses were regarded as nothing more than childish fancies. The first time I came across the idea of a videophone conference was in a Disney comic circa the 1980s. Daisy and Donald were making plans via Uncle Gyro’s new “fandangled crackpot invention” – a TV screen with a small camera built into the top casing connected to a telephone. Today, I can talk to my editor via the webcam/microphone device built into the top of my laptop screen. I remember the back pages of the same comic featuring ads for zit-makers, switchblade combs, sea monkeys, x-ray specs, and of course, some kind of practical joke spy camera glasses.
The Fashionable Spy
Spy camera glasses may have been fiction once upon a time, but they’re not the fodder of books and comics anymore. As a matter of fact, these spy camera glasses evolved so much over the years you can now find them in any color and style. Most of the spy camera glasses on the market currently would look more at home on an Olympic speed skater or a gold medal-winning sailboard rider. Sure, they were cool back in the late eighties and even the early nineties, but a pair of these spy camera glasses are certainly not going to help even the most invisible of men keep themselves under cover and out of danger. Remember, when it comes to spy camera glasses or any glasses for the matter, fashion first – function later!

Comment Night Vision Technology – The Third Eye of the Humans - 03/28/10
Night vision technology which enhances the visibility to humans is now used intensively for civilian purposes though it was used for military purposes for a long time. The night vision cameras and goggles are two applications of this technology where vision in the darkness is improved to the level that objects could be identified.
Technology used in the enhancement of vision in the night is divided into two. One is the enlargement of the visible range of the human eye. The other is amplifying the available light. In the second one what ever minute portions of light present is collected including the lower part of the infra red range and amplify that so as to enable the human eye to see. In the first one the upper part of the infra red range is used. Infra red rays generate heat. This heat is detected by the camera or any other equipment used. Normally warm beings like living animals and humans emit more heat. Using this heat living animals could be detected among the none heat emitting trees etc. Trees and other objects emit less heat as they only reflect heat rays which fall on them. Living beings emit more heat enabling them to be identified easier.
In practical situations night vision technology is used in crime prevention and protection from burglary in addition to war fare. The present day guerilla war fare could never be done without night vision goggles and other paraphernalia for the protection of soldiers and to enable them to go looking for the enemy in the night time. During Vietnam War American troops used this technology extensively. American army used this technology during Second World War. The instruments used during that time are called first generation equipment while what is being used now is the fifth generation technology.

Comment Preserving Night Vision With Colored LED Lights - 03/27/10
Colored LED lights have many uses from professional to recreational. Green, red, blue, and ultraviolet lights have all found their way into the realm of LED flashlights. The uses are varied and each color has particular uses that they are best suited for. All of the colored lights are great for night vision applications because they do not bleach out the chemicals that allow for the human eye to see at night.
The red LED bulb has been added to flashlights to enhance night vision. It provides great contrast and is not visible to the human eye over long distances. It also works well with night vision scopes and goggles. Photographers use the red colored light when doing night-time photography because it provides contrast while preserving the natural shadows developed by darkness. It cuts through smoke better than white light and, with the exception of red lines and marks on maps and charts, it makes reading in low, or no, light possible. Police and military units like the red LED for night operations because it will not interfere with night vision technology and can’t easily be picked up by other people.
The green LED light is preferred by hunters and fishermen because it is a very soft light that will not spook their prey. Green also does not attract insects like white or yellow light does. It is not easily picked up, unless looking directly at it, so it is useful in covert operations. It is another color that is useful in smoke filled environments.
The blue LED hand-held light is good for map or chart reading in situations where night vision, and avoiding detection, are important. Blue light is also helpful in locating blood and other bodily fluids at crime scenes or during search and rescue operations. Hunters also find the blue light helpful in following blood trails of injured animals. Blue lights are often used in small keychain lights because they are a soft light that works well to illuminate locks, keys, and small items. It does not have the same harsh glare as the bright, white LED. These lights are also good for cutting through fog.
Ultraviolet LED lights have found many uses in the professional world. They are used to detect counterfeit money, art, and antiques. They are also used to detect trace blood proteins and chemicals in soils from crime scenes. Just like blue light, this one will pick out blood and other bodily fluids that might be missed by the naked eye. Ultraviolet light acts like a black light in entertainment uses. It can bring out hidden messages and enhances neon and fluorescent colors. Ultraviolet lights can be used to recharge luminescent objects like fishing lures, watch faces, compass needles, SAR signals, etc. It is important not to shine ultraviolet LED lights directly into the eyes, as it can cause injury.
Whether looking to preserve night vision for hunting applications or to cut through smoke in a burning building colored LED lights are great for many applications. Their multitude of uses make them a must have for everyone. Flashlights are offered in single color lighting or with multiple bulbs for a choice of lighting options. This means that the right light is always available when it is needed. So, whether looking for a single light color for a specific application or multiple choices for whatever comes up, colored LED flashlights are a great choice.

Comment What Are The Best Thermal Night Vision Goggles? - 03/26/10
There are various different kinds of night vision goggles a person can use which have been specifically designed for use on land. In fact a number of the more well known night vision goggle manufacturers have produced ones for thermal use. Below I will take a closer look at some of the thermal night vision goggles that are now available to purchase.
TAG-7
TAG-7 offer the wearer one of the best performing thermal systems available today and are not that expensive to purchase. All a person needs is 2 AA batteries and comes with a head strap so that the wearer can use their hands on other tasks whilst using them. Although they only use AA batteries, these thermal night vision goggles still provide the wearer with a good clear image of their surroundings which have not been exposed to either light or shade. The great thing about these goggles is that they are small and lightweight and this makes them very comfortable for the user to wear.
ATN Otis-G7
These are another version of thermal NVG’s. The great thing about this particular pair is that they can either be attached to a helmet or the person can carry them in their hand. With this particular version you are actually offered the chance to connect to a video.
Because of their design the image you see through the goggles will be clear or unaffected by anything else around it. These particular goggles work by constantly detecting changes in heat from a body as well as the temperatures around the wearer. The thermal imaging used within these goggles ensure that the images are of the highest quality possible. Today these particular thermal night vision goggles are being used by members of law enforcement units along with units that deal with public safety such as firefighters.
The technology that is used in thermal night vision goggles works by capturing the upper part of the infra red light spectrum. This light is emitted through the heat of an object and rather than relying on the reflected light as other kinds of night vision goggles do. The hotter the object then the more of this light the object will emit. So when you use these you will see that a human body will emit more infra red light than say a tree or a building will.
